In recognition for her service to the building of socialism in China, and for furthering the cause of Chinese-Canadian relations, Comrade Isabel Crook was awarded a friendship medal by the People’s Republic of China as part of the country’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

The six other recipients of the award included Cuban revolutionary leader Raúl Castro, along with dignitaries and prominent China activists from Thailand, Tanzania, Russia and France.

Comrade Isabel, now 103 years old, was born in China into a missionary family and early in life made common cause with the revolutionary struggle there. She and her husband David, a British communist, arrived in Beijing with the People’s Liberation Army and Chairman Mao in 1949 and helped to set up the Foreign Languages Institute, on whose campus she still lives today.
